New program casts ‘Spotlight’ on those who deserve it

We like it.

On the 136th anniversary of Idaho statehood, Sen. Jim Risch announced a new initiative that deserves support from citizens across the Gem State.

The Idaho Service Spotlight, a biweekly recognition program honoring individuals whose courage, leadership, and sacrifice strengthen their communities, reflects the best of Idaho’s traditions and values.

Too often, it seems our attention is focused on division, controversy, and the loudest voices in the room. Yet the true character of Idaho is found in the acts of service performed every day by veterans, first responders, teachers, coaches, community leaders, and volunteers. We know this because we have such people right here in North Idaho who do this every day.

These individuals rarely seek recognition, but their contributions are essential to maintaining the quality of life we in Idaho cherish. The Idaho Service Spotlight provides a way to acknowledge these unsung heroes and ensure their stories are shared statewide.

Idaho has long been known for its spirit of independence, hard work, and commitment to neighbors. Idahoans can be counted on to step forward when help is needed. Whether responding to natural disasters, mentoring young people, serving in uniform, supporting local charities, or lending a helping hand to those facing challenges, countless residents make sacrifices every day for the benefit of others. They don’t ask for credit, and they usually don’t get it.

That is why Risch’s decision to recognize these individuals in the Congressional Record and on social media is important. Public recognition not only honors the recipients but also highlights positive examples of citizenship and leadership. And Lord knows such examples are welcome and needed. When communities celebrate service, they encourage others to become involved and demonstrate that making a difference matters. Let’s encourage each other rather than belittle each other.

By partnering with people to identify deserving awardees, the Idaho Service Spotlight ensures recognition comes from those who witness these acts of service firsthand.

Local residents know who has dedicated decades to volunteer work, who has shown extraordinary courage in moments of crisis, and who consistently puts community needs ahead of personal gain. Their voices will help ensure the honorees represent Idaho’s finest. Again, if we only look, such people are all us.

Perhaps most importantly, the program sends a message to younger generations. In a culture often focused on cell phones, personal achievement and recognition, the Idaho Service Spotlight elevates values like selflessness, duty, and commitment. These are the kind of qualities that build strong communities.

As Idaho celebrates 136 years of statehood, there is no better time to recognize the people who embody the principles that have defined the Gem State for generations.

The Idaho Service Spotlight is more than an award program; it is a reminder that Idaho’s greatest resource has always been its people.
